Patients requiring regular repeat medication can order repeat prescriptions in the following ways:

• By hand - drop your repeat slip in at reception with the required items clearly marked.
• By Post - send it to us with a stamped addressed envelope if you want us to post it back to you
• On line - if you are signed up for our online services. Please ask at reception if you would like to do this.

We do not fax prescriptions to pharmacies because they have been forgotten or left until the last minute to be ordered.  It is the responsibility of the patient to order and collect prescriptions in good time.

Please note that  although prescriptions are sent to the chemist electronically, they are not generated  automatically.  You still need to let us know when you need a new prescription.

Please note; medication that has been issued in the past but is not on your current prescription list is NOT considered to be repeat medication.

If you forget to order a prescription and have run out of necessary medication, you may be able to get help from your local pharmacy. Under the Urgent Provision of Repeat Medication Service, pharmacists may be able to issue  a small supply of  previously repeated medication without having to get a prescription from your GP. 

If this happens, telephone your usual Pharmacy to check that they offer this service.  If not, they may either direct you to another Pharmacy who does provide it, or ask you to phone 111 where you can request details of a local Pharmacy that provides the service.

When you collect the medication, you will need proof of both your identification and of your medication (for example, your repeat prescription list or the empty box which should have your details printed on it). Please note that controlled drugs and antibiotics are not provided through this service, you will need to ring 111 for these.

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

• those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
• those who are age exempt
• those with certain medical conditions

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

• Prescription (per item): £9.90
• 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £114.50
• 3-month PPC: £32.05

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

If you have any unwanted or out of date medication, please take it to your local pharmacy

To avoid waste, please do not continue to order medication that you no longer need by making sure that you put a cross in the box on your repeat medication slip.  If you do not have a slip because your prescription is sent directly to the chemist, please inform the surgery so that we can make sure you only get what you need.
